LONDON: Viagra, sold over the counter on Boots, is a prescription medication for erectile dysfunction. A study published yesterday in the British Medical Journal suggests that it may be safe and effective.
The research, led by Dr Graham Jackson, a University of Birmingham clinical pharmacist, was presented at the annual meeting of the European Association of Medical Pharmacology in London on the 12th and 13th May at 11am.
The trial, involving 1,500 men and their partners, found that the drug works by relaxing the muscles of the blood vessels to increase blood flow and reduce stress on the penile region. It also improves blood flow to the penis during sexual arousal. The drug is available in a generic form called sildenafil and is used to treat erectile dysfunction.
“Viagra is the first erectile dysfunction medication to be approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of erectile dysfunction,” said Dr Jackson. “We are proud that Pfizer, the largest pharmaceutical company in the world, has taken the initiative to bring affordable erectile dysfunction treatment to the marketplace.”
The Viagra market is valued at US$ 15.3 billion dollars, and is expected to reach US$ 29.3 billion by 2017.
The study, presented at the meeting, was part of a large clinical study conducted by the British Medical Journal, which was conducted in conjunction with the U. K. government’s Medical Research Council.
According to Dr Jackson, there is “no evidence that Viagra is safe and effective in men with erectile dysfunction.”
The drug is sold under the brand name Revatio. It is the first prescription drug to be approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
